Digital spring cleaning doesn’t mean delete everything or throw out all your gadgets and devices. It’s a time to clean up your digital footprint and reduce cyber clutter throughout your business. Not only will your business operations be more organized, you’ll be more secure.

There are tools and resources that can help your prioritize and organize your approach. These resources range from online checklists to enlisting an IT or website solutions firm for help with updating your systems or transitioning to new technologies.

Don’t try to tackle digital spring cleaning tasks all at once. Make a calendar, assign appropriate staff, and schedule tasks across 30 days or more. Involve staff throughout your company.

Other digital spring cleaning suggestions include:

  • Clean up your overloaded email box for improved organization and security (and for simple peace of mind.
  • Actually empty your deleted folder in your email.
  • Update all software especially those on connected devices. This can greatly reduce the risk from malware and other breaches.
  • Get rid of add-ons from downloads that you don’t use. Examples may include extra toolbars, plugins, extensions that are now on your internet browser.
  • Keep other apps current with updates and permissions not just for improved functionality, but for improved security.
  • Purge, delete or archive old files such as powerpoints, invoices, financial records.
  • Dispose of sensitive information by shredding it.
  • Dispose of and destroy hard drives, disks, memory cards, USBs, etc. that contain information no longer needed.
  • Add two factor authentication to your accounts - especially email, banking and social media which will enhance your security.
  • Change your passwords. Make sure you don’t use the same one for all accounts.
  • Password protect all devices with strong password. You can use passcodes or fingerprint protection for enhanced security.
  • Audit employee permissions and access on all accounts including social media, email, accounting software to name a few.
  • Create back ups for all important and sensitive data so you never have to worry about a “what if scenario”.
